HILBA Gear Motors

We are good at attaching our gear units to any type of motor according to customer requirements.

However, if you don’t want to think about which motor can be optimally combined with our gears, then you’ve come to the right place. Our pre-configured gear motors offer you the opportunity to select a suitable drive for your application in just a few steps without the need for in-depth expertise.

The product range includes our planetary and worm gear units in combination with selected brush-type and brushless electric motors. We operate in the small gear range from 11 to 500 Watts or a nominal torque of 0.5 up to 150 Nm.

Planetary gears, worm gears. What is the difference?2020-10-21T13:53:16+02:00

Planetary and worm gears differ fundamentally in the way they function.

With worm gears, the contact surfaces of the gear teeth glide on each other like a ski on snow. This makes the worm gear a very quiet option during operation. At the same time, the surfaces are subject to wear due to friction and part of the energy is converted into heat, resulting in a lower level of efficiency. Therefore, a material with good emergency running properties such as bronze is used. The axesof the gear wheels are always arranged at a right angle to each other and offset. Therefore the motor is always positioned at 90° to the output axis and is offset in height by the center distance. Worm gears can be manufactured with only one (1) tooth. Therefore high reduction ratios can be realized in one gear stage. This makes the worm gear unit simpleand compactindesign. Worm gears are also available with a hollow shaft or double-sided shaft.

The contact surfaces of planetary gears on the other hand roll against each other like a car wheel on the road. Wear is therefore minimal and their efficiency is high. However, more noise is generated during tooth engagement, making the planetary gear loudercompared to the worm gear. Steel can be used as a suitable material, which allows for high loadcapacities. The axisof the motor and the gear are coaxial, which means the planetary gear acts as an extension of the motor axis. Planetary gears can have high reduction ratios. To realize this, several gear wheels (gear stages) have to be installed. This leads to the fact that the gear unit becomes more complex in its structure as the reduction ratio increases. This also increases the costs the higher the reduction ratio becomes.

DC motor or better an EC motor?2020-10-21T14:05:51+02:00

Whether to use a brushless DC motor (EC or also BLDC) or a brushed DC motor is mainly a technological and cost-related decision.

If the control should be uncomplicatedand the priceas lowas possible, you should choose a DC motor. The control mechanism is very simple: At a minimum, a voltage must be applied to two connections to operate the motor. Furthermore, a DC motor is usually cheaper than a comparable EC motor.

EC motors are usually more powerful and their lifespanis significantly longer due to fewer wearing parts. EC motors are quieterand due to the missing brushes, they do not produce graphite dust and brush fire. This makes an EC motor better suited for delicate environments. The activationis much more complex compared to a DC motor. Additional control electronics are required and eight wires have to be connected.

What is a nominal torque and what is the maximum?2020-10-21T14:10:46+02:00

Let’s start with the word “nominal”. Values with the designation nominal… correspond to the maximum value permitted for continuous operation (S1).

The nominal torque is therefore the maximum permissible continuous torque that may act on the output shaft of the actuator. The nominal torque is determined by the continuous power of the electric motor, or by the continuous load of the attached gear unit.

There are now combinations of motors and gears where the maximum load of the gear is not yet reached with the nominal power of the electric motor. If the motor is now operated cyclically rather than continuously, a higher torque can also be achieved. In any case, the maximum load of the gear unit must not be exceeded. For this purpose it is often necessary to limit the motor current so that excessive torque does not lead to damage to the drive. The limit values can be taken from the data sheet of the respective gear motor or contact our sales department.

The listed variants are configurations selected by us with brushed and brushless DC motors. This selection should help you to find a suitable drive without previous knowledge and with as little effort as possible.

For many applications, however, no suitable combination can be found in this list. For example, would you like to use a three-phase motor, or have already selected a motor yourself?
